THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

OVERVIEW
“It takes 12 minutes to read, it’s going to take us 20 weeks to preach, but it takes an entire life to live.”

“I do not believe there is a problem in this country or the world today which could not be settled if approached through the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount.”  -HARRY S TRUMAN

TEXT:
“Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.”
MATTHEW 5:1-2

CONTEXT:
Jesus is:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth’. But I tell you …”  MATTHEW 5:38-39

“Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.”  MATTHEW 4:23

CONTENT: “The Sermon on the Mount describes what human life and human community look like when they come under the gracious rule of God. And what do they look like? Different!  -JOHN STOTT

IT’S THE SERMON THAT . . .

  • Gets into your 5:27-30
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

  • Gets into your 6:25-27
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

  • Gets into your 5:40
And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

  • Gets into your 16:18
    “… I will build my church…”

“The Sermon is not a list of requirements, but rather a description of the life of a people gathered by and around Jesus.” STANLEY HAUERWAS

FINAL THOUGHT:

“Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.”  MATTHEW 5:1-2

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” MATTHEW 7:24

“The Sermon on the Mount is not a set of principles to be obeyed apart from identification with Jesus Christ. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is getting his way with us.”  -OSWALD CHAMBERS

“Only a belief in the necessity and the possibility of a new birth can keep us from reading the Sermon on the Mount with either foolish optimism or hopeless despair.”  -JOHN STOTT
